Defector admits to WMD lies that triggered Iraq war | World news | The Guardian. It would seem like this would be a bigger deal. Big collective yawn from the US press.

The concerted effort to remove journalists lent a sense of foreboding to events in the square, where battles raged throughout the day between the protesters and Mubarak supporters, who human rights workers and protesters say were being paid and organized by the government. People bringing food, water and medicine to the protesters in the square [...]

I’ve been watching the waves on unrest sweeping Tunisia, Egypt, Syria and Yemen. In looking for coverage I noticed that Al Jazeera leaves the American network news organizations in the dust. US network coverage seems to be an infantile echo of Al Jazeera. I guess that’s expected since this is right in their backyard. I [...]

The results are in on the “miracle” of conservative smoke and mirrors budgetary policy in Texas: For Texas is where the modern conservative theory of budgeting — the belief that you should never raise taxes under any circumstances, that you can always balance the budget by cutting wasteful spending — has been implemented most completely. [...]

LRB · Eliot Weinberger · ‘Damn right,’ I said. London Review of Book takes on “Decision Points” (putatively) by George W. Bush. Call it auto-hagiography by proxy. W.’s Decision Points finally gets the Foucauldian reading it’s been crying out for. Eliot Weinberger is brutal on the team that slapped together a crass attempt to cash in. [...]

All the budding young Objectivists I met in college did seem to closely cleave to this: Paul Ryan requires that his staffers read Atlas Shrugged. I mean, I was inspired by Isaac Asimov, but I don’t think I’m Hari Seldon — whereas Ryan, it seems, really does think he’s John Galt. Time to bring out [...]

I don’t find myself in 100 accord with Reich, but I think he gets the basics right. The GOP is making excuses to to manufacture opposition to a treaty that’s supported by every living former Secretary of Defense, Secretary of State and Nation Security Adviser Democrat or Republican, with the exception of Condoleezza Rice who’s [...]

The price tag comes in at $858 billion, larger than the original Obama stimulus plan. It’s been framed as a tax deal, but I think it’s a stealth stimulus. This is basically the only (badly needed) stimulus that was anything near viable, allowing Congressional Conservatives and the Club for Growth to achieve simultaneous orgasm over [...]

I’ve not been posting much in the last few weeks. I had back surgery on Nov. 15th and stayed in hospital until Nov. 19th. They removed the two lowest level lumbar discs (L5-S1 and L4-L5) and fused the vertebrae.

Krugman has some interesting points here. Governments need to step into the breech and provide support while the economy recovers. But instead we have the election of a group of so-called fiscal conservatives from the same party that created the mess who will prolong the slump if they get their way. The whole thing reminds [...]

How to Balance the Federal Budget (in Three Days). It’s a valiant effort, but ultimately futile. Not many (if any at all) GOP Senators or Representatives would vote to increase the gas tax by a $1/gallon or cut military spending. You’d be hard pressed to find much enthusiasm on the left for raising the retirement [...]

via Falling Into the Economic Chasm – NYTimes.com. The real story of this election, then, is that of an economic policy that failed to deliver. Why? Because it was greatly inadequate to the task. For those who would say that progressive polices failed, I reply they weren’t really tried.

Ezra Klein – A new idea on medical malpractice reform. I thought this might be a promising approach that lends itself to bipartisan support: I meant to write about this the other day, but Peter Orszag’s proposal for medical-malpractice reform is pretty clever. As I read it, in fact, it’s not primarily a malpractice-reform proposal [...]
