CNN Reports: Gonzo to Resign!
August 27th, 2007 by Sonny
Finally Bush tosses Gonzo under the bus. The only question is who will the replacement be? This may lend credence to the US News (h/t via ThinkProgress) rumor about Chertoff replacing Gonzo. After all they need another loyalist to stonewall investigations and protect senior administration officials until Jan. 2009. Chertoff actually has more experience than Gonzo did. It will be nice to have a new face at DOJ lying to Congress and trampling constitutional right.
Update:
More from the NY Times
Update II: Glenn Greenwald hallucinates about replacing Gonzo with an independent leader with deep law enforcement experience. The best case senario, should democrats on the Hill try to have a real say in the confirmation, is another glorious recess appointment. I predict we’ll end up with another political hack insider (Chertoff, Feilding, Olsen or the like).
…the only acceptable replacement for Alberto Gonzales is someone who is truly independent of the Bush machine and whom Democrats are supremely confident will act independently, which means pursuing criminal investigations where warranted of the highest levels of this administration, including the departing Attorney General himself.
This would be a refreshing change at DOJ, but is not grounded in any political reality. Their entire ethic of leadership revolves around trying styme outside scrutiny of clearly illegal activities. Why would he allow an AG who wouldn’t kill inconvenient investigations?
