Committee amends, approves “enormous gift” to Big Content
The frist major problem with this bill is that it federalizes civil enforcement of private IP rights. It in effect deputizes the DOJ to file suits on behalf of content owners and to pass on to them any proceeds. I would ask doesn’t the DOJ have better things to do? It goes on to add a resolution:
…sipulating that, while “effective criminal enforcement of the intellectual property laws against such violations in all categories of works should be among the highest priorities of the Attorney General,”
I can think of many, many other DOJ priorities that should come before enforcing private IP rights:
- Investigating obvious abuse of power and crimminal activity in the executive branch, starting with Dick Chenney’s office.
- Prosecutiing terrorism cases.
- Maybe like prosecuting violent crimminals?
This is a stupid law designed to force the federal government and taxpayers to bear the costs of the RIAA and MPAA crusade to defend an obsolete business model. I’d much rather see efforts to collect money and distribute it to artisits than tying up DOJ lawyers with a civil issue.
